The University of South Carolina provides access to the wireless network for all faculty, staff and students. USC students, faculty and staff are allowed to access the wireless network through an authentication process.

Instructions for accessing the wireless network are available on this site. For additional support, please contact the UTS Help Desk at 777-1800 or place a ticket at http://uts.sc.edu/helpdesk . Students may schedule an appointment in the iCARE Center for help getting their computers configured for wireless access.

What is wireless networking?
Wireless networking is becoming a more modern alternative to wired networking. A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) typically extends an existing wired Local Area Network (LAN). WLANs utilize radio waves to maintain communication channels between computers. Advantages of wireless include mobility and elimination of unsightly cables. Disadvantages of wireless include slower connection speeds, potential security concerns, and possible radio interference due to weather, other wireless devices, or obstructions like buildings and trees. WLANs are built by attaching a device called the Access Point (AP) to the edge of the wired network.

The USC Wireless Network is not intended as a replacement for wired network access. Students, faculty and staff have secure wired connections inside their offices and residence halls. If you are planning to download large files and/or install software, you should consider using a wired connection for faster network speeds.

* Note: Access to the wireless network is not available inside individual student residence hall rooms . However, many common study areas and lounges inside the residence halls now have wireless access. Please click on the Wireless Map link for more information.
