To protect your computer from harmful worms and viruses, it is extremely important that you keep your virus software and security patches up-to-date. The following information contains links to sites where you can download needed patches and software along with helpful tips.

If you are running Microsoft Windows, they provide detailed instructions and help available for each operating system. To access Microsoft help, click on “Start,” select “Help and Support” .

  • To install current virus software, see the latest threats and view pertinent information, visit http://uts.sc.edu/virus 
     
  • Make sure your computer Operating System is up-to-date. If you are running Microsoft Windows, you can go to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us to check for updates. You can also setup your computer to update automatically. Go to Start, then Control Panel, then select Security Center. Choose automatic updates.
     
  • Make sure your firewalls are running as an added layer of security. Microsoft Windows XP provides an Internet Connection Firewall. It is available in the Security Center (from the Control Panel).
     
  • Stinger is a program available, in addition to antivirus software that can help to clean viruses from your computer. Go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/.  Sysclean is also a tool available from TrendMicro for virus cleaning and can be downloaded from http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp .
     
  • Spybot is a program available to keep spyware from infecting your computer. To install SpyBot, visit http://www.safer-networking.org
     
  • The iCARE Center at University Technology Services (1244 Blossom Street) is available for all students who want their computer checked and cleaned for viruses and spyware. Please make an appointment at http://uts.sc.edu/helpdesk or call the Help Desk at (803) 777-1800.
