    Q. How long will I stay connected to the network?

Network connections expire 7 days from the time you login.

We recommend that you manage your session timer by proactively logging out and then logging in again and completing the validation process daily. Once you logout and then log into the network again, the timer is reset for another 7 days.

    Q. How do I reset my session timer?

    Q. How do I logout?

If you are running the Clean Access agent on your Microsoft Windows PC, you can proactively logout by right-clicking the Clean Access icon in the system tray and selecting “Logout.”

    Q.  How do I login again?

If you are running the Clean Access agent on your Microsoft Windows PC, the Clean Access login window should “pop-up” to remind you to login. If your PC is connected to the USC residence hall network, and the Clean Access window does not “pop-up”, then right-click the Clean Access icon in the system tray and select “Login.”

If your systems is not a Windows PC, you can open an internet browser; you should then be redirected to login.

    Q. I am unable to login with my network username and password.

Your password does expire every 6 months; you may need to reset your password. You can obtain your network username and reset your password by logging into VIP and selecting the “Technology” link and then selecting the “Show Me Network Username” button. Note that your network username and password is not the USC identification number and PIN used to login to VIP itself.

    Q.  How long can my system “sleep” or be powered off before losing my network connection?

Although Clean Access was initially configured to logout a workstation that is powered off or in "sleep" mode for more than 18 hours,  this timer has now been disabled.  Your connection will remain for 7 days unless you proactively logout.

    Q. How will I know that my session has expired?

If your workstation is running Clean Access, the login window should “pop up,” reminding you to login again. Unfortunately, there is no warning message prior to your session timeout.

Other indications that your network connection has been terminated are:

    • Your internet browser may be redirected to the USC authentication webpage.
    • Email may fail to send or receive.
    • Instant messaging may fail or suddenly stop working.
    • File downloads may suddenly stop.

    Q. How can I tell if I am already logged in?

The best way is to try to go to an internet site. In most cases, if you are able to access www.sc.edu, you are online and logged in.

    Q. What IP address should I expect once I’m connected?

    IP Address: 172.16.xx.xx
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.252
    Default Gateway: 172.16.xx.xx

    Q. I am unable to ping the default gateway address; shouldn’t I be able to do this?

    Q. I have opened my browser but I am not redirected to a login page. What do I do?

You must try to go to a non-local site such as www.sc.edu or www.google.com.

    Q. I cannot access the login page. I get the redirection page, but then my browser gives an error and stops.

Generally, this is caused by an encryption (SSL) problem with your browser. Encryption is required for authentication to complete. Try another browser if you are unable to correct the problem with the first browser. (IE -> Netscape; Netscape -> IE). Usually, Netscape has fewer encryption problems (www.netscape.com).
