A particularly important service provided by UTS is technical support during Move-In Weekend. Each year, teams of technicians from University Technology Services fan out across the Columbia campus to help students get connected to the campus network, and troubleshoot computer problems.

Happy Birthday Internet!
In our World of the 21st Century, it's pretty common to get birth announcements via email: “We just had a beautiful baby girl, 5 lbs 13 ounces, and 18 ¾ inches! Mom and baby are doing great!”
It should come as no surprise, then, that the birth of the very medium we use to send these messages was also announced electronically. Twenty years ago this month, the Internet became operational with this email message: “The NSFNET Backbone has reached a state where we would like to more officially let operational traffic on.”

OneCarolina Update
The OneCarolina project team has completed a number of steps in the process of planning and preparing for implementation. OneCarolina is a multi-year project to replace outdated administrative systems throughout the University system. In the past few months, fit-gap studies and readiness assessments have been finalized.

New Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags
So you’re late to the airport, your flight is being announced, and of course, the line at the security checkpoint is very long. Lots of people ahead of you are being asked to pull laptops out of cases and turn them on. Time seems to slow. When you finally get to the checkpoint, you scramble to get your laptop out of its case, mouse dangling, DVDs flying, Velcro straps catching on everything. All the while you keep thinking, There has to be an easier way.
Well, soon there will be.
