Student Purchase Recommendations

Need a computer? Take advantage of being a student by getting an educational discount on a Dell or Apple computer, printer, and accessories.

Before buying a computer, check with your college for any specific requirements for your major and check the computer purchase recommendations.

The following are the recommended minimum specifications for new computers connecting to the University network:

2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended for Parallels with XP/Vista)
160 GB Hard Drive
AppleCare Protection Plan is highly recommended

Note: All new Apple laptops, except the MacBook Air, come standard with built-in wireless networking, 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW), 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet Card, Mac OS X v10.5, and iLife '09. The MacBook Air only comes with a USB port, built-in wireless networking, a mini display port, Mac OS X v10.5, and iLife '09. An external USB SuperDrive is highly recommended for the MacBook Air.

Apple

Apple computers and accessories are available on campus at the Gamecock Apple Hub. Visit the Gamecock Apple Hub on the first floor of the Russell House (across from Pandini’s and Zia Juice) or online at www.sc.edu/applehub.

Educational discounts are also available at the Apple Store for Education.

For your peace of mind, we recommend the AppleCare Protection Plan for Apple computer purchases. Not only will this warranty serve you through most of your college years, but it also allows your computer to be repaired on campus. University Technology Services technicians are certified to repair Apple hardware purchased with the AppleCare Protection Plan.

Dell

Dell computers, printers, and accessories can be purchased at educational discounts directly from Dell at www.dell.com/usc or 1-800-695-8133. When purchasing from Dell, use the USC Member ID US11129897 to get your discount.

For your peace of mind, we recommend a 3-year In-Home warranty which will serve you through most of your college years.
